Dr. Candi Overholt, an internal medicine physician at Takoma Regional Hospital, will discuss the prevention of complications associated with diabetes through proactive management of the disease during a diabetes support group meeting Thursday, Oct. 1, at the hospital.
Dr. Overholt, who practices with Takoma Medical Associates, will discuss tests that can determine how well a person with diabetes is controlling the disease. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m., in the Everett and Carolyn Coolidge Volunteer Conference Center on the Takoma Regional campus.
“How well controlled your diabetes is can determine your risk for complications, so it is extremely important to control the disease,” said Louisa Hammer, diabetes educator at Takoma Regional. “Complications from diabetes can be very scary, but they can be prevented in most cases.”
Prevention starts with good diabetes management, Hammer said, which includes regular screenings for potential complications such as cardiovascular disease and vision damage.
Diabetic-friendly refreshments will be served at the meeting. For more information or to reserve a seat, please call Hammer at (423) 636-0308.
