The psychiatric inpatient program at Takoma Hospital is a highly specialized program to address the behavioral care needs of men and women 65 years of age and older. As we are living longer, we are facing more challenging healthcare problems. Depression, psychosis, panic and anxiety states, dementia and behavioral symptoms are some of the issues addressed through the Takoma Senior Care program. Patients are encouraged to communicate their emotional concerns through participation in expressive therapy groups. Creative expressions through art and music are offered along with relaxation, exercise, group therapy, and skill building sessions.
The Takoma Senior Care program offers services that support the emotional and spiritual health of the older adult. The program is structured to accommodate the needs of all segments of the geriatric population, including those with dementia and those who are cognitively intact. Issues such as loss, grief, role changes, and adjustment are discussed in a nurturing environment. Takoma Senior Care specializes in issues such as loss of independence or difficulties adjusting to a supervised living environment.
Since many older adults who have behavioral or cognitive dysfunction also have physical distress, patients receive a comprehensive assessment of medication regimens, physical and psychiatric diagnosis in functional abilities.
The treatment team consisting of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and activity therapists establishes individualized treatment plans. Consulting medical specialists provide expertise, quality care and assess functional abilities, when difficult medical problems present themselves.
Our staff is dedicated to working together to provide care, with dignity and respect, to those individuals in their care.
The patient's overall physical and mental health is strengthened by the therapeutic program, along with medication administration. Social interaction is encouraged in a supportive Christian environment.

We have contracts with five nursing homes and one assisted living facility in the Greeneville area. We are frequently asked to evaluate residents who have had some type of change in their memory or mental status. Sometimes we are asked to make recommendations to the primary care physician and nursing home staff because a resident is having mood or behavioral changes, which are causing a decline in quality of life.
